As a funding instrument, the GHG quota can provide an incentive for the switch to electromobility.

Since 2022, every electrically powered vehicle has a greenhouse gas quota - the GHG quota. This makes a statement about how much CO2 is saved in consumption by switching from the combustion engine to an electric vehicle. The counterpart to this is the petroleum industry. Since 2022, it has been obliged to offset seven percent of the CO2 emissions produced by the fuel sold. This results in a new supply with tailored demand. The economic redistribution has the effect of promoting electromobility. Since 2022, the legislator has established an additional support mechanism for electromobility in the 38th BImSchV with the GHG quota. This subsidy is available independently of other subsidies, such as the BAFA purchase premium. As intermediaries, pooling providers such as CO2-quote.de bundle the GHG quotas and market them to private individuals, fleet operators and charging point operators. Cash payment of the quota proceeds is only one of many options. For many companies, the GHG quota also represents a completely new option for customer loyalty in the sense of a bonus system. For fleet operators, it results in a self-reinforcing system in that they invest the proceeds from the vehicles via the pooling provider in new public charging points in a cost-neutral way, which in turn enable new vehicles. The concrete effect for registered electric car owners is annual income and thus a further argument for the changeover.
