polisCAMP - MANY PEOPLE - ONE VISION
A forum for interaction - Dialogue between citizens, businesses and politics
How can sustainable urban design at the interface of mobility, energy and digitalisation succeed in realising the vision of a city worth living in? In order to find answers to this question, the City of Cologne had invited to a four-day dialogue in the polisCAMP as a side event of the polisMOBILITY trade fair & conference in the Cologne urban space.

In the heart of the cathedral city, on the east side of Rudolfplatz, the polisCAMP was created from 18 to 21 May 2022 - a temporary "village in conversion", surrounded by large trees, with stages for discussion and lawns to linger on. The core of the CAMP was made up of six construction trailers with "front gardens", which were designed and used by various actors along different sub-themes of urban development and mobility. The construction trailers, a stage and other design elements formed a space between village intimacy and construction site.
How can Cologne become climate-friendly? How do we enable a good life for all? What changes do we need to set in motion to achieve this? How can citizens shape the city of the future themselves? - These and other multi-layered questions and facets of urban transformation and the mobility turnaround were the focus of numerous "front garden talks", open discussions, inspiring keynotes, workshops, forums and lectures.
Together with personalities from science, civil society, companies, politics, administration - and above all with all interested visitors - visions of urban mobility and liveable cities and regions were discussed as a collective design task and solution approaches were made tangible.
(Creative) energy could be recharged at food trucks and at the supporting programme, such as concerts and street art performances.
The polisCAMP was opened on 18 May 2022 by Cologne's Lord Mayor Henriette Reker and Prof. Johannes Busmann, publisher of polis Magazin. Afterwards, Christian Hochfeld, Director Agora Verkehrswende, gave a keynote speech entitled "Climate neutral and fair. The future of mobility".

The CAMO - Centre for Automated Mobility was present at the polisCAMP with the topic "Future Lab Mobility - Everything Automated and Networked?
The Bergische Universität Wuppertal, the Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences and the Bergische Struktur- und Wirtschaftsförderungsgesellschaft mbH together form a contact point for topics related to automated mobility. The work of the application-oriented competence centre focuses on initiating a learning and knowledge transfer process as well as testing and disseminating solutions for the implementation of automated driving.
Four actors were dedicated to the topic of "Logistics of tomorrow - food from the region".
SoLaWi Cologne
As a solidarity harvesting community in the west of Cologne, SoLaWi (Solidarity Farming) Cologne grows more than 40 different vegetable crops for over 250 Cologne households. The ecological vegetable cultivation is pre-financed by all participants for one business year, so that the farmer has planning security and a secure income.
The harvest is delivered unpacked to several distribution points in the Cologne city area every week.
Marktschwärmer
creates regional networks of producers and consumers to contribute to a fairer and more sustainable food system. Producers set their own selling prices and market directly to customers: This means that there are no market fees or costs for intermediaries.
EKUPAC
has set itself the task of rethinking goods transport in the city and surrounding areas. The company develops innovative, digitally networked and sustainable concepts for transport and packaging as well as urban planning. In recent years, EKUPAC has specialised more and more in holistic approaches and, with its partners and corporate holdings, offers overarching solutions under the aspect of Circular Economy.
ecoCARRIER
is a mobility service provider for the last mile. The company focuses on the development and operation of city hubs, optimisation of logistics on the "last mile" and transport services with modern, high-performance e-cargo bikes from German production. The goal of ecoCARRIER is in particular to optimise the transport of people and goods and to minimise the number of diesel-powered vehicles in the city.

Car-free settlement Cologne-Nippes
Car-free living is a luxury that unfortunately not many people can enjoy - although many Cologne residents do not even have a car.
In the car-free settlement Stellwerk60 in Cologne-Nippes, there is no traffic noise, the air is clean and, above all, children can play safely outside here. The general hectic pace gives way to a humane slowness that reduces stress. The square between the houses becomes a public meeting space with a high quality of stay.
The car-free settlement shows that intelligent mobility does not need cars. Within the settlement, there is a strict driving and parking ban for private motor vehicles; there are no car parking spaces in the public space.
Verkehrsclub Deutschland (Cologne Regional Association)
The VCD has been working since 1986 as a non-profit environmental association for environmentally and socially compatible, safe and healthy mobility. The aim of the association is a change in transport that is comfortable, safe and affordable and enables no one to be dependent on their own car any more. As an ecological transport club, the Cologne chapter promotes a sensible coexistence of all means of transport and is also the ecological corrective in local transport policy.
FUSS e.V. - Professional Association for Pedestrian Traffic in Germany
has represented the interests of pedestrians in Germany since 1985. The association is the point of contact for administration, politics and the public on all questions relating to pedestrian traffic. The focus is on the development of statements and proposals for legislative changes and guidelines. Since walking as an elementary building block of sustainable mobility cannot be considered in isolation, FUSS e.V. works together with associations that deal with cycling, bus and rail transport.
BUW - Department of Cycling Planning
The teaching and research area of cycling planning is part of the Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering and is affiliated with the Transport Centre. Under the direction of Prof. Heather Kaths, the aim is to research the behaviour of cyclists and the flow of cycling traffic and to use the findings to promote cycling. The students of the Master's programme, which is currently being developed, are to be enabled to apply what they have learned independently and responsibly in various professional fields.
Just like physical mobility, mental mobility is essential for the success of the mobility transition. The following initiatives designed the thematic area "MitMachMobil - Städte anders denken":
KLuG - Cologne Live & Shape e.V.
The association KLuG - Köln Leben und Gestalten (Cologne Life and Design) wants to encourage Cologne residents to actively participate in shaping their city. Projects such as the WandelWerk, the Liebig257 or the Future Workshop create spaces for positive community life and open up paths for the joint shaping of a just future. To this end, Klug e.V. networks initiatives and associations. Klug e.V. networks initiatives and associations, creates and uses urban (open) spaces and consciously promotes creative and unconventional approaches.
Senf.koeln
is a digital platform for transparent, interactive and demand-oriented citizen participation where citizens can "put in their two cents". On the one hand, the map-based website is aimed at collecting ideas - independent of projects and detached from concrete building projects. On the other hand, digital project spaces on the platform can be used to collect and evaluate ideas for specific locations or projects. With graphic means and technologies such as augmented reality, Senf.Koeln brings the various proposed changes to life and lets Cologne residents experience and help shape their city of tomorrow.

Agora Cologne
The Agora is made up of Cologne citizens from the fields of civil society, culture and local business and works in a non-partisan, non-denominational and transparent manner. It creates solutions in the areas of mobility, climate protection, urban design, social justice and culture. Together with the neighbourhood, the Agora develops projects and structures for a viable, sustainable and liveable city.
LebeVeedel
The citizens' initiative LebeVeedel is an informally organised group of residents of the Nippes Clouth area, consisting of people in a wide variety of professions (urban and traffic planning, event management, communication, etc.) as well as pensioners. The aim of the initiative is to implement urban design inspirations from Barcelona, Amsterdam, Ghent and elsewhere with ideas from Cologne for more quality of life and stay.
Bürgerverein Kölner Eigelstein e.V.
The association has set itself the task of promoting and developing the economic, cultural and social potential of the Eigelstein. The aim is to strengthen cohesion in the Veedel and to jointly upgrade the residential environment. The association sees itself as a mediator between citizens and politics and administration: in this context, the "Veedelszimmer" in Weidengasse 23 acts as a meeting place where residents can voice their concerns.
The mobility of tomorrow is inconceivable without the aspect of intermodality and was designed by the following actors with the theme "Green urban transport - networked to the destination":
cambio CarSharing Rheinland
cambio is a car sharing company that is currently present in 33 German and 92 Belgian cities at over 1,300 stations. According to statistics, each cambio car replaces 11 private cars. For urban and regional planning, car sharing is therefore an important instrument in transport development planning. cambio also has an answer when it comes to finding a parking space: the company offers a reserved parking space for every vehicle.
Kreuzfeld Cologne
As a new district of Cologne, Kreuzfeld has a sophisticated intermodality concept. This shows how Cologne plans to intelligently connect different means of mobility and thus reduce the need for motorised private transport. In the north of the Cologne district of Chorweiler, a new district is to be created in a cooperative planning process, in which living and working space will be created as well as multi-use open spaces and a sustainable range of social infrastructure.
Rhine-Sieg Transport Association
The cities of Cologne, Bonn, Leverkusen, Monheim and several districts in the Rhineland and Bergisches Land have joined forces to form the Rhein-Sieg Transport Association (VRS). In this region, the use of local public transport is subject to uniform tickets and prices, coordinated timetables and common information and services. The VRS is responsible for mobility management and the coordination of regional and local transport services in the region, among other things, and is thus an essential player in shaping the transport turnaround in the Rhineland.
