Hydrogen in innercity rail transport - this could soon become a reality. A research consortium from Saxony, including Chemnitz University of Technology and Görlitzer Verkehrsbetriebe (GVB), is testing Europe's first hydrogen-powered tram as part of the ‘HyTraGen’ research project. Among other things, fuelling strategies are to be worked out and simulation models developed that will enable the regular operation of a hydrogen tram in the future - primarily in places where there are no overhead lines. The Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure is investing around eight million euros in the project, the results of which will pave the way for the construction of new innovative rail vehicles in Saxony.
