Team up for the transport transition! How do we achieve decarbonisation?

“How do we decarbonise the transport sector?” is the crucial question that must be solved in the context of the transport transition: In 2020 alone, burning fuel in road transport in the EU generated around 682 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. Across the EU, these emissions have risen by 12% since 1990.

This is the crucial issue that the polisMOBILITY conference will devote itself to on 25 May 2023. Leading representatives from the public sector, initiatives and industry will gather under the banner of “Team up for the transport transition!” to jointly discuss challenges and solutions.

Oliver Krischer, Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Transport of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and Chair of the German Transport Ministers’ Conference, will give a political keynote after the welcome address by Cologne’s Mayor, Henriette Reker. Krischer’s keynote will then be followed by a panel discussion with specialists in the field.

Together with Minister Krischer, the panellists will address the decarbonisation of the transport sector from the perspective of sector coupling, placing a special focus on the transition to sustainable drive technologies. Hosting the panel will be journalist Katharina Heckendorf. She will be joined by panellists Dr Wiebke Zimmer, Deputy Executive Director of the think tank Agora Verkehrswende; Johannes Wieczorek, Head of the Unit Climate Protection in the Mobility Sector, Environmental Protection within the German Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport; and Dr Ludwig Fazel, COO of Volkswagen Group Components. Together they will identify and discuss next steps and the necessary (intersectoral) alliances.

The discussion will focus on aspects such as: How can the goals of climate protection, preserving individual mobility and economic development be dovetailed effectively? How can intersectoral alliances in the form of ecosystems accelerate the mobility and energy transition? How can federal measures be channelled into locally effective stimuli? In which areas are research and innovation incentives needed?

Once again in May this year, representatives from local authorities, businesses, and the science and research community will gather with mobility experts from Germany and abroad at the polisMOBILITY expo & conference in Cologne. Alongside the showcases of innovative mobility solutions, a technically outstanding, transdisciplinary conference programme will again be the event’s centrepiece. The polisMOBILITY conference will be hosted at the Koelnmesse trade fair grounds from 24 to 26 May 2023. The conference fosters a dialogue between representatives from the public sector, the economy, and research and development. It provides local authorities and local authority-owned companies with tools for the strategic orientation and operational implementation of the transport and energy transition.
